This basic Westerville condominium was dressed up in a modern style, featuring black and white with red accents. The sofa and matching white ottomans are from Darron's in Upper Arlington.

Interior designer Scott Sammons brought to life a modern sitting room in a rather bland Westerville condo. If his client had suggestions, he listened closely, as he always does. But this time, well, the client was his mother.
“He was 12 when I first took him to Darron’s (furniture store in Arlington). He’s been designing for me ever since,” says Marilyn Price.
Perhaps the boldest piece in the room is the black and white houndstooth print couch from Darron’s. “This print is everywhere now, but four years ago, it was nowhere but in my mind,” says Sammons, referring to the challenge of finding the contemporary fabric in the Midwest. Sammons also found the matching ottomans at Darron’s. The sleek, black side table came from Z Gallerie, a design chain that operated a store at Easton Town Center but closed two years ago. He found the sculpted art pieces and other accessories there as well.
The fireplace was a white shell when Price moved into the condo. The room’s charcoal carpet complements the black and red tones throughout the room. Price says she was willing to take chances with color this time around: “I was so sick of white.”
Sammons says the chandelier-like light fixture sets the tone for the room. And as for the design of the rest of his mother’s home, Sammons says, “I’m not a big stickler for rooms to flow together. My own house is very eclectic,” he explains, adding that designing this contemporary sitting room was all about taking chances and creating comfort. “This place is all about her: flashy and surly.”
