Jacquie Ellis and Jeffrey Susie

Jacquie Ellis and Jeffrey Susie tell quite a story about how they ended up together. The couple, who exchanged vows at Emmanuel Lutheran Church on Dec. 31, 2010, met in London, England, dated for a few months, returned to the United States and didn’t speak to each other for several years.

While students at Ohio State, they participated in a study abroad program in London. Ellis says when they came home, Susie was graduating and she had two years left, so they parted ways, but she says she often thought of Susie over the next few years, trying—without success—to find him on Facebook. Six years later, she was at Bar Louie downtown when she ran into a friend from high school, who happened to be dating Susie’s younger brother. (The high school friend even told Ellis she saw her in one of the family’s photo albums.) Ellis made sure to leave with his e-mail address that night; two days later they met and “the rest is history,” she says, adding, “four months later, we were living in sin and engaged after nine. We had dated before, so the ‘getting-to-know-you’ stuff was out of the way.”

Ellis, who’s in the fashion business, loves vintage and her husband, who works for Nationwide, is a history buff, so they decided on an Old Hollywood theme for the wedding. Ellis found her Vera Wang dress at Big Rock Little Rooster in the Short North. (Her bridesmaids were instructed to buy “little black dresses.”) Before the couple headed to the Columbus Athenaeum for their reception, they walked downtown with their bridal party to take a New Year’s Eve-style photo in front of NBC 4’s studio at Broad and High streets. ABC 6/Fox 28 reporter Maria Durant was doing a story at the same location, so she interviewed the newlyweds and their friends. “I freaked out. I’ve met celebrities before, and I have never freaked out like this,” Ellis says, laughing.

Ellis and Susie are planning a June honeymoon to Italy, she says, but they already have traveled quite a bit this year. The couple has been to Chicago twice and is planning weekend getaways to San Francisco, Los Angeles, Philadelphia, Seattle and Portland. They hope to spend their first anniversary in Toronto. “We love big cities. We love visiting people and making new friends. It’s definitely our deal,” she says.
