December Must-Dos
Shadowbox Live's Holiday Hoopla
1. COOKIE MONSTER
The size of a cookie tin, family-run Bierberg Pastries opens for only six weeks a year. So don’t miss your chance to snag some of the city’s best German sweets—homemade macaroons, marzipan and other treats sold by the pound for cash or check,
9 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily (except Christmas Day) through Dec. 28. 729 S. Fifth St., German Village,
614-443-9959
2. NIGHT LIGHT
Extend bedtimes or reschedule date night to exploit festive entertainment and 9 p.m. closing time on Wednesdays through Jan. 2 at Franklin Park Conservatory and Botanical Gardens. During Merry & Bright Nights, poinsettias bloom, model trains rumble and even rooftop gardens twinkle with lights, marketing director Lori Kingston says. On Dec. 5, couples can sip hot chocolate next to campfires and kids can decorate cookies with Mrs. Claus. Entire families can gawk at ice sculptures and glassblowing demos Jan. 2.
1777 E. Broad St., Near East Side, fpconservatory.org
3. MR. FANTASY
Producer Steve Cross stopped counting bulbs when his Fantasy of Lights topped 1 million a few years ago—but he didn’t stop stringing them. Check out a poinsettia arch and other new displays along the 3-mile, drive-through light course open nightly through Jan. 1 in the Alum Creek State Park campground. 2911 S. Old State Rd., Delaware, alumcreek.com
4. COME TOGETHER
The Gallery Players will buck comfy holiday themes for a children’s play based on true events. “Hanukkah Lights in the Big Sky” follows a small Montana town that unites when a brick is thrown at a windowsill menorah. Shows run Dec. 8 to 16 at the Jewish Community Center of Greater Columbus. 1125 College Ave., Bexley, jccgalleryplayers.org
5. HOOPLA DREAMS
Shadowbox Live revs up the 21st edition of Holiday Hoopla, a bawdy, interactive rock-and-comedy revue that runs through Dec. 29. “We always bring someone up on stage and play with them a little bit,” says Santa Baby Julie Klein of the yuletide lounge divas who close the show. “We try to pick someone who looks like they’re having fun—but not too much fun, if you know what I mean.” 503 S. Front St., Brewery District, shadowboxlive.org
