A sign, our new website and contest news

Hubbard Grille.

Hubbard Grille.

Jeffry Konczal

A confession: When Hubbard Grille opened early last year, I hoped our restaurant critics would give it top billing when they named our best new restaurants of 2011.

My preference had nothing to do with the restaurant itself. It was all about its tall, exterior neon sign. As soon as I saw it casting an orange glow along High Street in the Short North, I knew it could work as the primary image for the cover of this issue.

And with no prompting on my part, our reviewers, John Champlin and John Marshall, did deem it Best of the Best. After all, it was the only restaurant to receive a four-star rating last year. Plus, the only one with such cool signage.

Hubbard becomes the seventh recipient of our Best of the Best distinction. Here’s a list of the previous winners:

2010: Knead Urban Dinner

2009: Third & Hollywood

2008: DeepWood

2007: Rosendales

2006: Trattoria La Tavola

2005: Z Cucina

It should be noted that Trattoria La Tavola and Rosendales are no longer open—and, coincidentally, that Hubbard now occupies the same space Rosendales did before it closed a couple of years ago.

Good news to report: We have scrapped our old website in favor of a shiny new model. This version is easier to navigate and much more visually pleasing.

One of the coolest features is a navigational tool for about 1,000 Greater Columbus restaurants (click on Wine & Dine). You also can tap into our archive of stories (please be patient as we build that section), read classic Columbus Monthly stories, review our Best of Columbus choices, plan your weekend activities, scan restaurant reviews, check out who attended which high-profile party and a lot more.

In addition, our home page offers CM Daily Buzz, our take on breaking news and events—giving you more reasons to visit the site more frequently.

And it’s easy to find out information about newsstand locations, advertising material or ways to subscribe. Plus, check out how to access a digital version of Columbus Monthly.

We’re happy to hear your feedback, whether compliments or criticisms (rpaprocki@columbusmediaenterprises.com).
