Get Blown Away: Hair Blowouts
Erika Taylor, Urban Spa
Put simply, blowouts are the solution to bad hair days—a salon-perfect look without the fuss of cut and color. Blowout bars, spots that specialize only in that service, have been popular for years in cities like New York and Los Angeles, and the trend is finally sneaking its way here. Local ladies are enjoying blowouts before special events, job interviews, and even checking out of the home-style game to opt for a pro style a few times a week. So we, of course, just had to see what all the fuss is about.

Sensing my slight panic when asked how I wanted my hair, stylist Tiffany Bonner showed me images of styles that would work with my hair texture, from straight and sleek to voluptuous curl. A big yes to the latter—the “Victoria’s Secret,” as they call their most-requested style. After a shampoo and relaxing scalp massage, Bonner gave my long hair shape and height with just a round brush and hair dryer. The result, in less than an hour, was a swooping style with just the right amount of height on top and movement on bottom. Cost ranges from $45 to $65, or $35 Tuesday to Thursday from noon to 4 p.m. 275 S. Fourth St., Downtown, 614-564-9054, erikataylorurbanspa.com

My Ultimate Blowout was quite the departure from my typical blow-dry-and-hope-for-the-best hair routine: After a quick shampooing, three stylists all set to work on my hair, eye makeup and nails. After plenty of blow-drying with a round brush (and lots and lots of hairspray), I left 45 minutes later, hair big and bouncy with glossy loose curls (more old-school Hollywood than Cosmopolitan cover model), ready to hit the town for dinner and drinks with friends.
