“I’ve had my hair the same style for three years—I’m kind of up for almost anything. As I’ve gotten older, it’s gotten darker, drier and coarser, and it seems not to hold color as long.”
THE LOOK:
Colorist Lindsey Hauser used a technique called balayage to freehand “paint” highlights around Finley’s face. This lent Finley’s hair a “playful and bright look,” Neal says. “Plus, it gives her more time between her touchups, because the highlighting is not applied directly to the root area.” Neal took several inches off Finley’s hair—it overwhelmed her petite face and frame, he says—and gave her hair movement and bounce. “It will grow out in perfect proportions,” Neal says. A side-swept fringe completes the younger, softer look.
“It feels great and definitely has more body, plus it looks fresh and young.”
PRODUCTS

Kerastase Reflection Bain Chroma Captive shampoo ($39)
What it does: The sulfate-free formula skips chemicals that can strip hair color

Kerastase Mousse Substantive ($42)
What it does: Contains antioxidants and collagen to restore mature hair to its natural luster and volume

Kerastase Elixir Ultime 125 ml ($54)
What it does: Adds shine, conditioning, volume and texture for styling and finishing
Pro tip: Mix a bit of the elixir in the hand with the mousse for styling. When hair is dry, evenly distribute half a pump for finishing. Glide palms from hair midshaft to ends, then apply sparingly closer to the hairline.
Pro tip: Neal waits until hair is 95 percent dry before beginning to style with a round natural boar-bristle brush, which lends shine to hair. Let the hair cool around the barrel of the brush several seconds to set the shape and volume.
