“It’s always been crazy curly; always really frizzy. I keep it this length because it’s easier to throw into a
ponytail. Pulling it back is my only
defense.”
THE LOOK:
Sue Wieging’s goal is simple: Easily manage her mane (as her three kids call it) and look professional at the same time. The Blacklick resident has had styles in all lengths (all the way down to a 1-inch pixie) and colors (as drastic as platinum), so she’s open to anything, she tells Kat Sasfy, senior director at MAX the Salon in the Short North. “I want you to have a lot of movement and bounce,” Sasfy responds, starting to cut each curl individually—a technique that will tame the poof and create a more modern shape. To give hair greater depth, Sasfy adds auburn with hints of copper and gold. “With her skin tone and eye color, it will warm her up,” she says. —Beth Stallings
“I love it. I like the combination of the different tones. And it’s the calmest my hair has ever been, even though it’s still super curly.”
PRODUCTS

Deva Diffuser ($25.50)
What it does: Acts like fingers while drying hair but without the resulting frizz. Pro tip: The key to a controlled curly style is not to touch it, Sasfy says. “When you comb it, it separates hair and that’s what gives you poof.”
Deva curl Set Up & Above ($19.95)
What it does: From the moisture-rich Deva line of products created specifically for curly hair, it gives hold and controls frizz.
Pro tip: Let hair air dry after applying this tacky gel and curls will get bigger and prettier, Sasfy says.

Deva Curl Light Defining Gel ($18.95)
What it does: This gel adds a bit of hold to wet hair.
