How to Find Your Perfect Stylist

Tim Johnson Photo

A perfect stylist doesn’t just cut hair. He counsels and gives customers a relaxing break from their busy lives. We asked three independent stylists who work in Salon Lofts locations to offer advice on finding the perfect hair pro: Trevor Gryphen, a Gahanna stylist with 24 years experience;  Worthington stylist Diane Loeffert, who has been working with hair for 35 years; and Brian Hawkins, a Short North stylist for 10 years.

1. Find a friend or co-worker with similar hair—and a fabulous cut—and ask for his or her stylist’s name. If your hair is curly or fine, for example, styling might require special attention.

2. Ask for a list of services and a price menu to ensure you will receive the services you need at a price you can afford.

3. Will the stylist tell you when you’re making a mistake? Good stylists want to please their customers. Sometimes, that means telling a customer that the style she wants doesn’t work with her facial features.

4. Ask the stylist how he keeps up with the latest trends in cuts and styles. You should be getting a style that looks current.

5. Ask for a consultation. When you find a potential stylist, ask to sit down and discuss your style, personality, and what disappointed you at previous salons. If the stylist doesn’t listen, move on.

6. Make sure you speak the same language. “What you think is short hair and what I think is short hair might be very different,” Loeffert says.

7. Will your stylist be available when you are? Some stylists offer late-night hours, and some work weekends to accommodate busy clients.

8. Is the stylist well-groomed? Make sure the stylist and the salon are clean and orderly.

9. Does she love her job? All three of our experts agreed that enthusiasm makes for a better cut and happier client experience.

10. Sometimes it just doesn’t click, so don’t be afraid to keep looking. Much like a marriage, relationships with hairdressers are very personal.
