The Extra Style: Extensions, Chemical Relaxers and Keratin Treatments
Tim Johnson Photo
Everyone wants luxurious locks, and some of us will go to extreme measures to get them. We asked local experts on relaxers, extensions and hair-smoothing about these popular (and sometimes pricey) treatments
Extensions
Expert: Tammy Hurley, Studio 33 Salon & Spa, 33 N. Grant Ave., Downtown, 614-228-2991, studio33salonandspa.com
What is it: Clusters of human hair, with coloring closely matching yours, are bonded to your own natural hair using a glue-like compound made of protein.
Pros: Adds movie-star-worthy color, highlights, length, fullness
Cons: Extensions mat if not brushed regularly, frequent salon visits for upkeep, must be removed professionally to save natural hair. Not suitable for people with weak hair
Cost: $600-$2,000
Chemical relaxers
Expert: Rebecca Wenell, Salons at High & Hubbard, 17 W. Hubbard Ave., Short North, 614-732-7548, salonsathighandhubbard.com
What it is: A treatment that chemically alters the natural texture or curl pattern of hair; there are relaxer formulas for various hair types and the desired result.
Pros: De-frizzes and de-poofs the curliest, coarsest hair and makes it easier to style
Cons: Maintenance, can leave hair brittle and dry, contains harsh chemicals
Cost: $80-$120
Keratin treatments
Expert: Melinda Thomas, Atelier Salon, 1120 King Ave., Upper Arlington, 614-485-9558, atelierbymason.com
What it is: Smooths hair, easing frizz into waves and making wavy hair straighter.
Pros: Long-lasting but not permanent, lends softness and shine
Cons: Controversy surrounding chemicals in some treatments
Cost: $250 and up for Curlinterrupted at Atelier; prices for other brands and salons vary
