Short for Be A Better Earthling, B.A.B.E is an online community Cathy Tiffany created in which she shares her experiences, as well as those of others, about how to live better—and in the process—live greener.
As such, Tiffany does what she can to make her life and home as earth-friendly as possible.
“I really dig making my piece of the planet as sustainable as I can,” says the Dublin resident.
She’s installed rain barrels, built box gardens for vegetables, created frog ponds and hung bird feeders. She even has a flock of chickens so she can collect her own eggs.
In one fashion or another, each of these elements is helpful and relieves a burden on the environment. For instance, box gardening requires lower maintenance and there’s less need for weeding, thus eliminating the need to use harsh chemicals.
It all has to do with being a little bit more knowledgeable when it comes to “our health, money and the environment, which are all connected,” Tiffany says.
Purchasing decisions and finding ways to consume less play a big role in her effort. Instead of spending money on “stuff,” she tries to be more creative and inventive when it comes to food, clothing or other tangible items.
“If we paid more attention, the world wouldn’t be in such a pickle,” she says.
“We are all really disconnected from where our food comes from,” adds Tiffany regarding her decision to buy chickens.
“It was a long process, but one day I thought, ‘I want chickens,’ so I researched it and
I did it.”
“I do what I believe is right,” Tiffany says. And, what is within her means. She, like many others, might not be able to afford installing solar panels. But, “I do the best I can to take a load off the environment.”
