The last time social entrepreneur Joe DeLoss’s photo was in Columbus Monthly, he was posing with his dog in Goodale Park as a featured single in the May 2010 issue.
A lot can happen in a year or more. DeLoss said “I do” to Lisa Siriporn on Nov. 7, 2011, at the Franklin Park Conservatory and Botanical Gardens. Their wedding was on a Monday, which seems to fit well with this unconventional pair.
The couple met in November 2008 and, in fact, were introduced by Suzie Reed, one of Columbus Monthly’s 2011 featured singles, who knew them both. One problem: Siriporn lived in Brooklyn. But over the next two years, DeLoss and Siriporn developed a strong friendship through phone calls,
e-mails and occasional visits.
Although their feelings continued to develop, they weren’t ready to make a long-distance commitment, so they swapped dating stories from New York and Columbus until they realized “we were each other’s standard,” says DeLoss.
In the fall of 2010, they got serious about each other and realized they needed to live in the same place. A year later, DeLoss says, “Marriage came up, and we thought it was the only way we could express what we have.”
The couple gathered 30 of their closest family and friends for a Monday afternoon ceremony. The Saturday before the wedding, they shared a meal at Basil in the Short North with guests, and following the ceremony, everyone went to Due Amici to celebrate.
Siriporn, who runs a dog-walking and training business in New York City, plans to move to Columbus in January. Meanwhile, DeLoss is exploring new business opportunities with Nobul, his latest social entrepreneurship venture. (He founded Freshbox Catering in 2009 and remained with the company until 2011.
The two say their relationship works well because they have always had open communication, “which sometimes isn’t the easiest,” admits Siriporn.
They agree that sometimes life just surprises you in a good way. “We weren’t setting out to find a long-term partner,” says DeLoss. “We weren’t looking for anything or trying to impress each other. It just lined up perfectly.”
