International Incident
If the U.N. opened a cocktail lounge for diplomats, it might look something like Manifesto. The self-described Tuscan grill serves hearty small plates like Meatball Sliders and a spicy Milanese Caprese flatbread. The U.S. is represented with stylized portraits of all 44 presidents. Best of all, Manifesto celebrates the greatest Scotch whisky-producing nation on earth with a respectable list of 40-plus single-malt Scotches.
The wildly eclectic decor is a global mashup, too. Glassware is perched on rustic wooden bookshelves behind the polished granite bar. The city’s biggest candelabra soars above a set of chrome-and-leather loungers with a riveted steel coffee table that’s straight out of a steampunk pub.
Yeah, this place is all over the map, but the world travels lead back to a little round booth in the dark corner past the bar, one of many cozy conversation spaces. Manifesto is a nice addition to a Capitol Square scene in need of an after-work stop for fine Scotch and maybe a little local diplomacy.
