Grilled diver scallops
If you’re craving scallops, you might consider heading to Third & Hollywood, 1433 W. Third Ave., this summer. Grilled diver scallops ($29), flown in from Maine, are plated with a red pepper coulis, as well as a chilled salad of haricots verts, fingerling potatoes, fresh corn and Kalamata olives, says owner Kevin Malhame. (He adds the dish is a daily special for Wednesday nights only.) He also says that Third & Hollywood is expanding. He has rented the back half of the building the restaurant now partially occupies. More dining space will be added and the wine list will expand. He expects the new part to open by fall.
Opening
Jennie Scheinbach, owner of Pattycake Bakery, plans to open City Beet cafe by early next year, she says. (The restaurant will take over the realty office that sits next door to the bakery on North High Street in Clintonville.) The menu is still under development, but Scheinbach says the food will be “healthy, nourishing and taste good.” She hopes to serve breakfast all day and lunch as well. (A dinner menu will come later.) Menu items will include house-made whole grain breads, salads, soups, sandwiches, organic smoothies and juices. (Scheinbach hopes to get a liquor license, too.) “I feel a strong desire to nourish people,” she says.
News bites
Lindey’s, 169 E. Beck St., celebrated its 30th anniversary in early June by offering special menus and happy hours that will take place on the 30th of each month for the next year (except, of course, February), says Lincoln Workman, event director and manager. “How many restaurants in Columbus have been around for that long?” Workman asks. He adds that three-course menus likely will be available for $30 during this yearlong promotion.
If you’re looking for a new lunch spot to try, you might stop by Sage American Bistro, 2653 N. High St., located north of Ohio State’s campus. The lunch menu, which launched earlier this summer, started because guests were asking for it, says executive chef and owner Bill Glover. The menu changes seasonally, but current offerings include an egg salad croissant, pork belly sliders and a veal meatball dish. Sage is open for lunch Tuesday through Friday from 11 am to 2 pm.
Dirty Frank’s Hot Dog Palace, 248 S. Fourth St., started to serve brunch in early summer, says owner Liz Lessner. A hot dog place with a brunch menu may seem strange, but Lessner says it’s going well so far. “The menu is designed to be fun and while it’s limited in its offerings, there’s something for everyone, including vegetarian and vegan options,” she explains. “The cool thing about hot dogs is that they taste a lot like breakfast sausage so they are easy to incorporate into egg dishes.” Menu items include a chili scramble, a vegan scramble, breakfast nachos, French toast and sausage gravy and biscuits. (The regular hot dog menu is available as well.) Brunch is served from 11 am to 4 pm on weekends.
Bexley mini boom
Several new places have opened (or soon will be) in Bexley, including a tea shop, a gluten-free bakery and a place serving Mediterranean and Turkish cuisine.
A second location of ZenCha Tea Salon opened at 2396 E. Main St. in late spring, says special events coordinator Racheal Ward. (The original site is in the Short North, and the company also is expanding downtown to the intersection of Pearl Alley and Gay Street in July.) “We’re offering a slightly different food menu, with appetizers, more entrees and desserts,” says Ward.
Geri Peacock opened Cherbourg Bakery, 541 S. Drexel Ave., earlier this year. A lifelong baker, she put her hobby on hold when diagnosed with a gluten intolerance three years ago. Friends encouraged her to bake sans gluten and wheat, and now she’s turned her passion into a business. The bakery, named after a port city in France where Peacock has a family history, is open Monday 11 am to 5 pm, Tuesday through Thursday 7:30 am to 7 pm, Friday and Saturday 7:30 am to 9 pm and closed Sunday.
And Café Istanbul is expected to open at 2455 E. Main St. in Bexley by early July, says owner Fatih Gunal, who also owns the Easton Town Center location. He says the menu will stay the same, and there will be a full bar and patio. Hours are Monday through Thursday 11 am to 10 pm, Friday and Saturday till 10:30 pm and Sunday till 9 pm.
