Changes at Columbus Alternative HS
More on Columbus Alternative High School.
CAHS changes
I was the PTA president at Columbus Alternative High School for three years [“Is bigger better?”—May]. We continually tried negotiating with the Columbus City Schools administration about preserving the things that worked to keep CAHS strong, including the small, intimate learning environment. Increasing the school population is not a new idea; it has been going on for the past few years. The expansion has already resulted in the gym, cafeteria and auditorium not being able to accommodate the student population.
Cracks in the academic integrity at CAHS occur every year because of district policies and decisions. Thinking attrition will preserve the smaller size of CAHS is just not true. In reality, there has always been attrition at CAHS and leaving CAHS to return to your neighborhood school is actually harder now than ever because you have to apply to your neighborhood school and re-entry is not guaranteed.
Unfortunately, CAHS is no longer one of the country’s best high schools. It is sinking a bit every year and it needs all of the successful alumni to pressure superintendent Gene Harris and the board of education to let it be.

Corrections
In “The Legend of Papa Joe” in the June issue, the prison sentence for Nigel L. Jackson was incorrectly reported. He is serving 140 months for conspiring to distribute marijuana in connection with the Brittany Hills Posse drug-trafficking case.
