Kimberly Byce first spotted Trent Beers when she signed up for Match.com in June 2009. She didn’t know it then, but she would be saying “I do” on April 28, nearly three years after their first online glance.
“We are Match advocates,” says Byce, adding that Beers was the first and last guy she met on the popular dating site. They joined because of their busy work schedules—Byce is the assistant director of online marketing for the Ohio State University Foundation, and Beers is a senior graphic designer at Abercrombie & Fitch. The bride says she was just getting out of a relationship and didn’t expect to meet anyone so soon. “I wanted to browse for eye candy, and I got that and more.”
The bride recalls that when she and Beers became Facebook friends after meeting online, they realized they had no friends in common. “How on earth did we both exist in Columbus in parallel universes? We needed Match to find each other.”
Beers proposed on their second anniversary by re-creating their first date. They had brunch at Surly Girl Saloon in the Short North and went antique shopping, where Beers popped the question.
The couple says it was important that their wedding day be fun and relaxed. “We didn’t want black-tie. We just wanted to throw a party,” she explains. The duo decided to host three different parties in one day, each location being one of their favorite places. Their ceremony took place at the Ohio Historical Society’s Ohio Village and dinner followed at the North Market. For drinks and dancing, the newlyweds rented the basement of Barley’s Brewing Company on High Street.
Byce says their day’s theme was vintage carnival, which was reflected in the wedding party’s wardrobe and special touches throughout the evening, such as popcorn on the tables and soda floats instead of a traditional cake.
Beers also designed vintage-style Ohio postcards, which guests used to write their wishes and advice for the couple.
She adds that she and Beers are each other’s biggest supporters. “The person that you’re with should be a magnifying glass of your best qualities,” she says. “They should enhance you, and that’s how I feel with him.”
