WHEN TO CATCH THE BANDS:
- Passion Pit, June 7, LC Pavilion
- The Postal Service, June 8, LC
- Bunbury Music Festival, July 12 to 14, Cincinnati
- Fun, July 14, LC
On a sunny Saturday in April, 12-year-olds Connie Richards and Olivia Midnight linger outside LC Pavilion, rummaging through more than 100 neon index cards in a plastic container labeled “The Box of Wonder.” Each bears a question the Worthington sixth-graders might lob at Welsh rockers The Joy Formidable during a Q&A for KidsInterviewBands.com, a project started last year with help from dads Darren Richards and Chip Midnight, who’s covered music for The Big Takeover and Donewaiting.com since the ’90s.
“You guys know more rock stars than I do,” a security guard says as he opens a backstage door for the girls. “And I’ve been doing this 22 years.”
Connie and Olivia hope to meet even more this summer, adding Passion Pit, Weird Al Yankovic and Fun to an 80-band interviewee list that includes The Smashing Pumpkins and Carly Rae Jepsen. kidsinterviewbands.com
How do you come up with new questions?
Olivia: My dad sends us emails like every week about who we’re interviewing. Then he sends us links to the bands, called homework. One [assignment] was we had to come up with three new questions.
Connie: I sometimes ask my friends. I want to know what people are interested in knowing about the band.
Do you get nervous?
O: We rarely do. If so, it’s a band we really know and we like, like Grouplove or Imagine Dragons.
Who were you most star-struck with?
O: Phillip Phillips. Everyone I know said that in the video, you can see me just look up and smile at the camera.
Any bands you’re excited to interview this summer?
O: At Bunbury [Music Festival], there’s Fun, Walk the Moon, Cake.
C: And MGMT.
Fun is coming to Columbus, too. What about other Columbus shows? Passion Pit?
O & C: Oh, yeah!
The Postal Service?
O: Mmmm … I don’t know.
C: I want to interview Of Monsters & Men!
Olivia, I bet your dad will want you to interview Everclear, Live, Filter and Sponge for the Summerland Tour.
O: I think so ...
C: We’ll interview any band. We don’t have to know them.
O: My dad will be like, ‘Do you wanna interview them?’ And I’m like, ‘Sure.’ And he’ll say, ‘Are you gonna just say yes to every band I ask you about?’ And I’m like, ‘Yeah.’
C: But we do not like country music.
What was the most fun band to interview?
C: Mine would probably be Tegan and Sara.
O: Yeah. We got to do some things we don’t normally do, like we made them jump rope.
