Furniture bargains
You can save 40 to 80 percent off furniture at Macy’s Eastland Clearance Center. This store carries discontinued and defective furniture. (The defect could be as minor as a torn seam.) You’ll find bedroom, dining room and living room furniture, along with lamps, mattresses, area rugs and occasional pieces. They are the same name-brand items you would find at a Macy’s store.
The center offers added savings through colored tickets—match the ticket color on the item you’re interested in with a color chart to get an additional 10 to 40 percent off. Rugs are 75 percent off the original price. Delivery is available for $80, whether you’re getting one piece or a houseful.
Macy’s Eastland Clearance Center, 4141 Refugee Rd. (west of Hamilton Road), 860-1528. Open Mon-Sat 10 am-9 pm, Sun 11 am-6 pm.

Alvarado says she plans to specialize in husky and half-size goods.
She also has opened a school uniform section for city and charter schools, with labels such as French Toast and Dickies. She says if the shop doesn’t have a uniform in stock, it can order one. ELEGANT TOUCHES For special occasions such as weddings and first communions, Lady M Ltd can add a touch of elegance with its custom veils. Owner Millie Hartle says her custom-designed veils range in style from traditional to unique and are moderately priced. The business is a family affair and includes Hartle’s daughter, Michelle Hartle Honer, who has experience in the New York bridal industry.
Hartle says veils start at $19 for a first communion veil and run up to $1,000 for high-end wedding ones made at the shop from fabric embroidered and hand-beaded in India. They come in any length or width to accommodate the wearer. Bring the dress you plan to wear so you can be sure to get a veil that is the perfect match. You’ll also find decorated tiaras, combs, hairpieces and headbands that would add flair to a prom or party dress.
The other side of this business is Paper Occasions, which offers custom invitations that add a personal touch to special events. You can select the design from a wide variety of samples.
