WHAT IS MOST IMPORTANT TO YOU?
Living intentionally. Taking an active role in creating my life rather than being a passive spectator to it. I like the growth that comes from stretching me outside my comfort zone. Like this interview!
FAVORITE BOOK:
I loved The Iliad, but that was in college and the chances of me going back and re-reading it are pretty slim. I really liked Freakonomics. I’m currently belatedly reading The Omnivore’s Dilemma. Honestly, I read more periodicals than books these days.
FAVORITE MOVIE:
If I were still a teenager, I’d say the first Star Wars and The Empire Strikes Back. Among more recent films, Lost in Translation is one that really stuck with me.
FAVORITE TV SHOWS:
“30 Rock” for Liz Lemon, “Parks & Recreation,” “Breaking Bad” and “The Walking Dead,” and HBO’s “Hung,” but only for Jane Adams’s character.
FAVORITE MUSIC:
There was a period where I was all about tiki music from the ’50s and early ’60s. I went through a Brazilian Bossa Nova phase. Right now, I’m listening to Sirius XMU mostly.
MOST SPONTANEOUS THING I’VE EVER DONE:
Anyone and everyone who knows me knows that spontaneity is something for which I require advance notice.
MY FAVORITE VACATION:
Definitely Brussels and Amsterdam in 2003. It was my first time overseas, and it was a blast. It was especially memorable because we were in the air over Newfoundland when we started bombing Iraq.
QUALITIES I’M HOPING TO FIND IN A PARTNER:
I’m introverted and deliberative, so I’m looking to offset that somewhat with someone who is extroverted and expressive and more spontaneous than I am, but not excessively so. Positive and upbeat, and someone who makes me laugh hard.
DEAL BREAKERS:
Intolerance. Meanness. On a lighter note, I have cats. So if someone actively dislikes cats then that’s a problem. Insanity and drug addiction are also problematic.
THE FIRST THING I WANT TO KNOW WHEN I MEET SOMEONE NEW:
I really want to know her creativity level and how she expresses it. Creativity in a woman is super attractive to me because she’s always manifesting herself to the world in a new way. It makes her innate femininity even more fascinating.
WHAT I HOPE TO BE DOING IN FIVE OR 10 YEARS:
Chasing after my kids and ruefully wishing for their energy. Sitting on the porch with my wife enjoying some wine and cheese. Career-wise, I’m barely getting settled into my current role with the Lt. Governor, so my focus is here-and-now.
