A haven for woodcrafters

H&M

HIS & HERS H&M, a family clothing store that opened in Sweden in 1947, now has around 2,200 sites in more than 40 markets around the world. The business arrived in the U.S. in 2000, and this month the Easton location is celebrating its first anniversary. The concept is to provide stylish fashions at low prices, with durable-quality apparel for men, women and children. Just about everything in the store, with the possible exception of coats, is less than $30. Jeans start at $9.95. Styles range from dressy to casual. H&M also sells its own brand of cosmetics, accessories and footwear. The selection of hats, purses and shoes is large.

H&M does not own factories, but instead buys its goods from 700 independent suppliers, primarily in Asia and Europe. The fall 2011 fashion collaborator is Donatella Versace, whose designs will be in select stores, including the Easton location, beginning in mid November.

H&M, 140 Easton Town Center, 478-6036, hm.com/us, open Mon-Thu 10 am-9 pm, Fri-Sat till 10 pm, Sun noon-6 pm; 5043 Tuttle Crossing Blvd. (in the Mall at Tuttle Crossing), 932-9310, open Mon-Sat 10 am-9 pm, Sun noon-6 pm.

CREATING WITH WOOD If you’re looking for a winter pastime to keep you busy—and perhaps give you the opportunity to make some unique holiday gifts—you might find it at Woodcraft. According to franchise owner Jim Baumgardner, the store has more than 8,000 tools to help woodcrafters complete just about any project. When you do a project yourself, he adds, the quality usually is better.

A library, classes, demonstrations, tools and supplies make this the place to go to learn. One of the shop’s specialties is carving tools. The woods available for projects are mainly hardwoods, with options such as teak, ebony, cypress knees, Asian satinwood, cherry and walnut. Look for discounts on manager’s specials, closeouts and floor models.

You can check out tools to try them before you buy. Some of the classes are aimed at helping people learn about tools, while others are project oriented. While a few classes are free, most are $25 and up, which includes use of the workshop and supplies. Beginning in October, the store is offering classes in making Christmas ornaments.

On Nov. 5, Woodcraft is hosting an open house from 9 am to 6 pm. Scott Phillips, host of PBS’s “The American Woodshop,” will be on hand, and you’ll have a chance to pit your knowledge against his and possibly win a prize in the “Stump the Forester” contest from 10 am to noon. There also will be demonstrations by vendor reps, including Feil, Festool, Jet and Porter-Cable.

Woodcraft, 1077 Bethel Rd. (southwest corner of Kenny and Bethel roads), 273-0488; woodcraft.com. Open Mon-Fri 9 am-7 pm (Thu till 9 pm), Sat till 6 pm, Sun noon-5 pm.

ENCORE EXPERIENCE ReUseIt is a fun resale shop that goes out of its way to find unique items for the home. Owners Michael Osborne and Troy Timbrook opened the store in April, and they’ve already doubled the size to 6,200 square feet. According to Osborne, they buy and sell only items that are in working order and currently in demand. They pay cash for merchandise they accept.

Furniture styles range from vintage to mid-century modern. You’ll find bedroom and living room sets, a large assortment of lamps and small kitchen utensils. When I was there, I saw a 1960 dinette set with four chairs in like-new condition for $125. Osborne mentioned a pair of Laurel and Hardy lamps and framed Viennese cat masks as examples of some unique buys. There’s new merchandise every day.

ReUseIt, 747 Chambers Rd. (next to Lennox Town Center, just off Olentangy River Road), 291-7777; reuseitcolumbus.com. Open Mon-Sat 10 am-8 pm, Sun noon-5 pm.
