What better way to support cancer awareness than by accessorizing?

As Pelotonia 2010 approaches next month, local efforts are being made to raise money and awareness for cancer research. Carla Grieshop, a nurse manager at the James Cancer Hospital & Solove Research Institute, teamed up with Sawchuk Jewelers in Hilliard to create jewelry that benefits the cycling tour.

"A bicycle pin was gifted to me last year by a patient's husband who was riding in Pelotonia," Grieshop said. "The takeaway was that Pelotonia is such a cool emblem, and it's a neat representation of the whole concept. I thought a jewelry piece would be really great."

The unique jewelry, which includes pins, necklaces and bracelets, features the Pelotonia cycling symbol. The pieces can be customized, which adds a personalized effect when participants are riding in honor of a friend or family member affected by cancer. Types of cancers correlate with different gemstones, and the pieces also can be engraved.

Prices for the jewelry range from $50 to $100, with proceeds benefiting Pelotonia. The jewelry will continue to be offered throughout the year. For more information or to order, visit the Rays for the Cure Facebook page. --Heather Weekley
