Lip gloss is all about the shine. When you're after a slick, fresh look, gloss is what does the trick. In a quest for the perfect gloss, we headed to the drugstore to try out some that don't break the bank.
Burt's Bees Super Shiny Natural Lip Gloss ($ 7 )
1 star out of 4
Pros: If the clear gloss route isn't for you, this 100 percent natural lip gloss creates a "Sweet Pink" tint. Cons: With all the hype surrounding Burt's Bees, I had high hopes for this one. I was disappointed: The shine lasted for only an hour and it left that embarrassing white residue on my lips.
Neutrogena Moisture Shine Lip Soother ($6. 50 )
4 stars out of 4
Pros: If long-lasting shine is the goal, this lip gloss is the winner. The gloss felt light and lasted for four hours before I had to reapply. And the SPF 20 doesn't hurt for everyday lip protection. This was my favorite by a landslide. Cons: Although "Gleam" was a pretty bubblegum pink color in the tube, it was a clear gloss once it hit my lips.
Maybelline Shine Sensational Lip Gloss ($5)
3 stars out of 4 Pros: The "Crushed Candy" flavor had a peppermint taste perfect for the impending holiday season. The gloss left my lips looking plumper than before.
Cons: This gloss had the heaviest and stickiest feel out of the four. It also contains traces of glitter, cueing flashbacks to the fifth grade.
CoverGirl Wetslicks Fruit Spritzers ($ 5 )
2 stars out of 4 Pros: It was very shiny and light on the lips. It was the only one out of the tested glosses with a distinct scent - the "Guava Splash" was refreshing and fun.
Cons: As with the Neutrogena gloss, I was hoping this one would go on pink. But it was just clear - and I wonder whether the other shades would be as well.
