Top Trends: 2012
Trendspotter Marian Salzman recently issued her annual list of top style trends for 2012. The president of Euro RSCG Worldwide PR in North America, Salzman has spent 15 years talking societal trends, from technology to parenting. Here's what she thinks will be big in fashion. –Kristy Eckert
1. Roaring '20s Chic
On the runways, designers like Gucci and Roberto Cavalli favored swingy flapper dresses with drop waists, deco touches and Zelda Fitzgerald as muse. Just what a dreary economy needs: a hint of Gatsby-esque partying and better times to come.
2. Tribal Chic
Ethnic prints are in, winning over Donna Karan, who was influenced by a trip to Haiti, and even upright Burberry.
3. Color Me Green
Earth tones take center stage, dominated by a Sherwood Forest palette of soft, mossy tones which are soothing and pastoral.
4. Eco Forever
"Eco fashion" is finally just "fashion" as environmentally friendly textiles and manufacturing become expected. "Sustainability" enters the industry vernacular.
5. The Curated Closet
Belt-tightening means editing wardrobes and buying essential pieces that are high-quality and timeless. We'll see discount fatigue set in (waiting in line for Missoni at Target did us in) as quality overtakes quantity.
