The blogger's style through the years
We're taking a little stroll through the past to talk about our favorite fashion moments. Here, we walk with guest bloggerMolly Martin, a stylist for a national retailer and blogger onLovely + Rust.
First time I remember being aware ofstyle:
I don't really remember a time when I wasn't aware. Back to school shopping was always my favorite time of year, and even earlier than that, my sister and I had a giant box of dress-up clothes that included my cousin's old prom dresses.
First pair of shoes I remember loving:
A pair of flat, lace-up, ivory ankle boots (in about the third or fourth grade)
The thing I wouldn't take off as a kid:
I even asked my mom about this one, and we can't remember me having something like this. I think I was too fickle to like something for very long! I do remember a few hats: a stone washed jean hat, and a red & white checkered hat (below)… and I loved Popeye, so I always wanted my Popeye pin (right) on everything.
Most memorable first-day-of-school outfit:
In the third grade… a black pair of stirrup pants and a pale yellow shirt dress/tunic with little black polka dots. I remember it well because stirrup pants were against the dress code, so I tried to hide they were stirrups by wearing those scrunched socks we all wore back then. It didn't work, and I got in trouble. (I was such a rebel.)
Must-have clothing item orstylewhen I was in junior high:
My mom helped with this one. Apparently, I had to have a brown leather bomber jacket. I had totally forgotten about this! My sister and I both got brown leather jackets that year; it was a big deal.
What I wore in my senior pictures:
I had five to six different outfits, but the most memorable is a pair of bib overalls. I thought they were so cool.
First piece of clothing or shoes I remember splurging on:
I think this would be my camel wool coat when I moved to Chicago right after college. I remember paying the extra money to have the Thinsulate lining for those Chicago winters. (It still wasn't warm enough!)
Most memorable wedding look:
I have two: my friend's wedding in Jackson Hole-I wore a Winter Kate maxi dress that I loved. Her wedding was outside with the mountains as the backdrop (just breathtaking). And my second look would have to be my own wedding.
Item in my closet I've had the longest:
My mom's Levi's jean jacket. (My sister has it on in this pic!) And a GAP jean shirt I've had since high school.
Items I've literally worn out:
My Foley + Corinna Mid City tote. I've lost the long shoulder strap, and I'm still carrying it.
Items I've bought multiples of:
Minnetonka moccasins (I currently own three pairs of mocs and three pairs of boots) and green army jackets! Both are obsessions I freely admit.
Biggest fashion miss (aka: thestylemoment I wish I could take back):
I grew up in the '80s and '90s, so let's talk about hair. "Mall bangs." You know, you sprayed them practically straight up with Rave hairspray (I used #3). What were we thinking?
Biggest fashion hit (aka: thestylemoment that made me feel most amazing):
Besides my wedding day, I'm not sure I have one that sticks out. Maybe mine is yet to come.
All-time most memorablestylemoment:
Maybe my first cocktail party after I moved to Chicago (post college). It was at the Art Institute on Michigan Ave, and it was the first fancy dress I bought that wasn't for a high school dance. It was black lace with a nude slip, and I still have it. It was one of the first times I remember feeling "grown up."
