Everything that shows up in the room is something we found locally.

Sheri Toth

"People think to put together an awesome room, someone has to fly to New York or Europe. That's not always the case," said Sheri Toth, interior designer and owner of Artistic Spaces Interior Design. "Everything that shows up in the room is something we found locally."

When Toth designs rooms, she utilizes elements from many different outlets; some are her original work, or she adds details - like silver leaf or a little paint - to items purchased at retail stores. But always, she said, the pieces reflect the tastes of the home-owner and the way he or she will use the room.

Before putting a room together, Toth recommends putting together a basic idea of the budget. Prioritize what items you want to spend the most on. If you love lush rugs, splurge there; if it's sofa you want to highlight, go for it. But knowing your priorities ahead of time can help keep your spending in line.

Interior designers like Toth are paid hourly. Those hours can be spent shopping with you, shopping for you or consulting on possibilities.
