Inspired to do a little urban homesteading

Posted by Tessa Berg on March 14, 2014

As spring approaches each year I tell myself, "This is the year I’m going to start my garden." So far, the most I’ve accomplished are a few fresh herbs in the windowsill. Creating a lush, beautiful garden is a huge commitment—it takes time, dedication, and lots of love.

That’s why I was so inspired by Rachel Tayse Baillieul, who is an urban homesteader in Clintonville (harmonioushomestead.com). Not only does she have an adorable hoop house and multiple gardens surrounding her home, but she and her husband Alex also raise chickens.

I spent a recent afternoon chasing their chickens around the yard—as it turns out they are not the easiest animals to photograph, but they sure are cute! I left Clintonville feeling inspired. Maybe this actually is the year I will build a garden, or at least grow a few potted vegetables. One step at a time, right? Be sure to check out the Arch City section in our April issue for more insight into urban homesteading (and chicken photos!).
