Inspired to do a little urban homesteading

Posted by Tessa Berg on March 14, 2014

As spring approaches each year I tell myself, "This is the year I’m going to start my garden." So far, the most I’ve accomplished are a few fresh herbs in the windowsill. Creating a lush, beautiful garden is a huge commitment—it takes time, dedication, and lots of love.

That’s why I was so inspired by Rachel Tayse Baillieul, who is an urban homesteader in Clintonville ( Not only does she have an adorable hoop house and multiple gardens surrounding her home, but she and her husband Alex also raise chickens.

I spent a recent afternoon chasing their chickens around the yard—as it turns out they are not the easiest animals to photograph, but they sure are cute! I left Clintonville feeling inspired. Maybe this actually is the year I will build a garden, or at least grow a few potted vegetables. One step at a time, right? Be sure to check out the Arch City section in our April issue for more insight into urban homesteading (and chicken photos!).
