As winter’s final days slip away, thousands of Central Ohioans will take a break from the cold when Ohio Mulch presents The Columbus Dispatch Home & Garden Show. The show—held at the Ohio Expo Center from Feb. 22 to March 2—is a one-stop shop for your home, inside and out. Read on to see what’s new for 2014, which of your favorites will return and so much more.
The Garden Showcase
The Garden Showcase, of course, is the real showstopper when Ohio Mulch presents The Columbus Dispatch Home & Garden Show. From small gardens perfect for urbanites to grand displays to suit suburb-dwellers, the show offers it all. Using the theme “Simple Spaces, Amazing Places,” each of the 11 gardens—all by landscape designers and master gardeners associated with the Columbus Landscape Association—will wow you with intricate detailing, awe-inspiring designs and plenty of inspiration to create your own urban oasis.
The garden designers realize show attendees all work with different garden layouts—with varying amounts of space—and they’ve created designs to suit just about everyone. Highlights of the 2014 show include Five Seasons Landscape Management’s outdoor living space complete with an outdoor pizza oven and Oakland Nursery’s wooded garden, where you’ll find weeping willows, a gorgeous water feature and sculptures from a local artist.
Programming is one of the things the show does best—from DIY demonstrations to gardening talks and so much more, the show’s schedule is packed with entertainment and educational events on several stages. Returning this year is a food-focused series co-produced by Crave magazine, Columbus’ go-to source for all things dining. The programming, which will feature local chefs and experts on dining out in Central Ohio, will provide show-goers with insider advice for both dining out on the town and creating fantastic meals at home.
Imagine: It’s 8 a.m. and you’ve just pulled out of the neighborhood—rushing to work for another task-packed day with no break in sight—and you suddenly realize you’ve forgotten to change the thermostat. Your home will remain a balmy 72 degrees for the entire day, despite the fact that no one will return for the next several hours. With energy bills through the roof, it’s a costly mistake. But with home automation, it’s also a mistake that can be quickly fixed. Just pull out your smartphone—featuring your new home-automation application—and remotely change the temperature in your house.
Home automation is just one of the features of the Fifth Third Bank Smart Home built and designed by Lowe’s, one of the most exciting new elements of the 2014 show. Inside the walls of the “home,” you’ll learn about the perks of home automation—remote temperature control, home security, the ability to monitor the well being of your family from afar—as well as smart TVs, the best in gaming, home entertainment and more.
The state-of-the-art Smart Home will feature a variety of room setups and is a must-visit attraction for those who want to make life easier (and safer) for those who want to entertain like nobody’s business.
For the Sports Fan(atic)
Want to be a big hit with the sports fan in your life? Head to the 10TV Wall-to-Wall Sports Lounge, where man cave meets techie dream room. The room will feature wall-to-wall televisions, amazing audio and entertainment setups like you’ve never seen before.
This isn’t a normal game-viewing experience: The technology in the Sports Lounge is serious stuff. And with the help of the knowledgeable staff on hand, you’ll be ready to entertain by the time the first Buckeye touchdown is run into the end zone come fall.
What will you find at this year’s Home & Garden Show? In short: almost everything. More than 400 companies will have items for basement to rooftop and front porch to backyard. If you’re in need of remodeling assistance, it’s here. If you’re looking to revamp a “blah” room in your home, we’ve got you covered. Exhibitors include Ohio Mulch, Rosati Windows, Simple Bath, Organized Home Remodeling and Closets by Design.
In the Garage
The Bryant Heating and Cooling 97.1 The Fan Guy’s Garage is your one-stop shop for everything auto. NAPA will provide the cabinets and flooring, as well as the “crazy car” lift that will demonstrate how the pros work on their vehicles. This is a must-experience space for anyone who likes to use their garage as their own personal retreat.
Central Ohioans are big on making the most of their homes and outdoor spaces, and the show’s marketplace is where you’ll find everything you need to do so, from on-trend decor beauties to tools for mastering the kitchen. The Marketplace has been expanded for 2014; a highlight is Cedarbrook Landscaping and Garden Center Inc.’s 600 square feet of gardening products and inspiration.
