As Minnesota-based barbecuers Jon and Kristy Bigalk tell it, the secret behind a great sauce is patience. Take their all-natural, gluten-free Sweet Kristy’s Sauce, for example, which took seven years and hundreds of hours of tasting to perfect. Their diligence more than paid off, as their creation earned first-place honors for best sauce at the Minneapolis Grill Fest and Columbus Jazz & Rib Fest in 2012.
Their business, Just North of Memphis, will return to Jazz & Rib Fest this month (July 18 to 20)—along with 21 competing barbecue teams from near and far—making this your once-a-year chance to pick up a bottle of the award-winning sauce ($4). The sweet and tangy topper makes use of a dozen ingredients, like garlic, dry mustard, fresh cracked pepper and red-wine vinegar.
