The North Market unveiled its new layout Friday morning, changes spawned by a $1.2 million city-funded update to the ventilation system (construction begins soon) and the availability of four stands for new merchants. The North Market unveiled its new layout Friday morning, changes spawned by a $1.2 million city-funded update to the ventilation system (construction begins soon) and the availability of four stands for new merchants.

Among the big moves: Jeni's Splendid Ice Creams shifts from its longstanding, outer aisle space on the Park Street of the market to a slot across from the Greener Grocer. North Market Spices, which expanded this year when neighboring Candy Shack closed, will move into the current Expressly Market Bakery spot (on the parking lot side), while Expressly Market bumps two slots over. Pam's Popcorn and Pure Imagination will both relocate to center aisle stands. Some of the shops staying put include Brezel (which expanded and moved into the former Clever Crow spot this year), Omega Artisan Baking, Curds & Whey, The Barrel and Bottle, Bluescreek Farm Meats and The Fish Guys.

The four open stands will be next to Brezel, behind Curds & Whey, next to The Fish Guys and beside Flavors of India.

Market leaders are still considering tenants for the open spaces, says North Market executive director Rick Harrison Wolfe, adding he wants to ensure a good mix of vendors. One void he'd like to fill? A great deli counter, he says.

Work will be done at night and the hope, Harrison Wolfe says, is to be completed by November in time for the holidays.
