There's a lot in the works at the North Market. In addition to a new ventilation system, longtime vendors are shifting around to make way for new merchants, including Pistacia Vera (which will open a bakery stand sometime before Dec. 1). Who will fill the remaining three open slots isn't public knowledge, but North Market executive director Rick Harrison Wolfe felt confident earlier this week that he would have a few announcements to make soon.

So, while we wait for word on who the newcomers will be, one Market staple stand is hosting a sweet dollar deal in celebration of the shifts on Friday, Sept. 27.

From 4 to 7 p.m., Jeni's Splendid Ice Creams will offer all cones for $1. And if you're wearing Jeni's gear-a hat, T-shirt, button, etc.-you'll get your ice cream cone for free.

One of the stands marked for relocation (the ice cream shop has held its current space since they opened in 2002), Jeni's moved to its new spot across from the Greener Grocer this week. The dollar cone promotion, Jeni Britton Bauer says, is meant to thank North Market patrons for their support over the years.

The $1.2 million renovation at the North Market will update the ventilation system and offer a new exhaust, grease and smoke hoods for prepared-foods merchants. So why did some stands move? Because not every stand needs a ventilation hood, some merchants offered to change spaces to make way for new vendors who needed the equipment to cook on site. Jeni's for example, was in one of these coveted hood spots, because, in the beginning, Britton Bauer was making her ice creams on site. As the company has expanded, that's no longer the case.

Looking forward to what newcomers the North Market will be cooking up. Stay tuned to the blog for any upcoming announcements!
