21 Historical Dinner Club

Alana's Food & Wine

First, it was the Kahiki, the kitschy Polynesian eatery on East Broad Street that closed in 2000 to make way for a Walgreens. Next up is Jai Lai, a restaurant, once known for its lunchtime beef stew and prime rib dinners, that closed in 1996 after a 63-year run. Cuisine from these classic Columbus eateries lives again for one night thanks to new dinner series Historical Dinner Club.

The private dinners, which started in October, are hosted by chef Alana Shock at her Campus neighborhood restaurant Alana's Food & Wine. Each event features a favorite Columbus restaurant with dinner, history and memories brought back to life. The night starts with a talk about the restaurant, insight from Shock on her interpretation of the old menu, as well as a gift to take home.

"The first one was so much fun," says Shock, who closes her restaurant for the evening to make the dinners feel intimate.

Restaurants featured in the future may include the Maramor (a former Downtown restaurant and nightclub) and the Chintz Room (the former restaurant inside Lazarus department store).

Tickets for the 40-seat dinner are $125 per person. Proceeds benefit the Columbus Historical Society. Reservations can be made at columbushistory.org or by calling 614-224-0822. Look for updates and posts about the menu at historicaldinnerclub.com.
