Just when you think home building trends are staid, creative builders continue to offer surprises.

This spring Bob Webb has introduced a new trend in home building and remodeling: the messy kitchen.

This extra galley-style kitchen, complete with a deep sink and pantry area, is tucked away behind the main kitchen, generally with a door that makes it appear to be a pantry. Food can be prepped in this out-of-the-way space, a pocket door can be closed and clean up can be later.

Meanwhile, the main kitchen and entertaining space remains spotless and ready for guests—whether you're expecting them, or not.

The messy kitchen has been unveiled in Bob Webb's new model home in the Ravines at McCammon Chase, 3382 Westbrook Place, in Lewis Center.

Doorkeepers

Some local high-rises offer added security.

With a new era of development underway for high-rise condominiums Downtown, it's interesting to take note of the security measures involved. At the new LeVeque Tower Residences, for example, developer Brett Kaufman is creating exclusive condominium residences in which residents will have full access to the Marriott Autograph Collection hotel and concierge services, which are several floors below in the same building.

Plenty of Downtown residential complexes offer security measures including locked doors, locked floors, secure elevators, locked parking lots, gated garages and such. But high-rise condominiums that provide round-the-clock doormen (or women) are few. Listed often as concierge services, this phrase essentially means that no one gets to your door without first checking in at the front desk.

Indeed, doormen (and women) do exist in Central Ohio. In addition to the LeVeque's concierge, here's where you'll find them.

Miranova, 1 Miranova Place in Riversouth, near Bicentennial Park. Developed in 2000, this building is home to many well-known Columbusites. In addition to its 24-hour concierge, it also has an outdoor swimming pool, indoor party room and more.

Summit Chase, 1000 Urlin Ave. in Grandview. Within walking distance of Grandview's busy restaurant row, this is perhaps Central Ohio's oldest high-rise condominium building. Built in 1966, it is likely one of the first to offer round-the-clock concierge services. Summit Chase is perched on a hillside and is surrounded by lush greenspace. It has a heated outdoor swimming pool, valet parking and more.

The Waterford, 155 E. Main St. in Riversouth, near Bicentennial Park. This red brick building, developed in 1988, has round-the-clock concierge service, an indoor swimming pool and other amenities.

Northbank, 300 W. Spring St. in the River North area, within walking distance of the Arena District. One of Downtown's newest high-rises to date, this facility opened in 2007 and has full-time concierge services, a conference room, an outdoor kitchen, a theater room and more.

The Heights at Grandview, at the corner of Third and Grandview avenues. At five stories high, this low-rise building in the center of Grandview has concierge services and other security features.
