Real newlyweds give wedding planning tips based on their experience.

Sayje married Derek Brown on March 31, 2017, the Columbus Athenaeum.

What are you happy you spent money on?

An all-out venue and having hair and make-up on-site.

What do you think you could have done without?

In addition to cake, we had mini cupcakes, buckeyes and cookies that didn't all get eaten. But the box got passed around at the after party, so they were still enjoyed.

What was your biggest surprise when planning?

How much others can insert themselves into your wedding, whether it's openly asking for an invite or giving their opinion about what you should do with your wedding.

Did you experience any wedding-day snafus, and how did you handle them?

Yes. But when I asked others, I realized what was a snafu to me went completely unnoticed by anyone else. At the end of the day, the main thing is you’re married, so unless your snafu is the officiant or license, you've still accomplished your goal.

Any dress shopping advice?

Bring good, honest, fun friends, but not too many. I also went out first on a “dry run” with just one close friend, because I get nervous when everyone is looking at me. It helped ease my nerves for the actual shopping day.

Do you have any general advice for couples currently planning their weddings?

Remember the little things are just that: little. Most times, they’re not worth the stress or argument.
