Real newlyweds give wedding planning tips based on their experience.

Stephanie and Austin Shockey’s wedding took place on Aug. 12, 2017, at Pinnacle Golf Club.

If you could do anything about your wedding differently, what would you change and why?

I would have started [planning] our wedding earlier. The time flies by so quickly!

What are you happy you spent money on?

We went back and forth for months on getting a videographer, and we are so happy we did!

What do you think you could have done without in your wedding?

Nothing really. We had popcorn at the end of the night and it was a big hit, as was our cookie table. … Our guests were happy and full.

What was your biggest surprise when planning your wedding?

How many people do not send back RSVPs. This made a guest count very challenging at times, since we had to reach out to people or got their RSVP cards much later.

What do you wish you'd known before you started planning?

People say, “don’t stress the small stuff,” and it is so true.

Did you experience any wedding-day snafus? What were they, and how did you handle them?

On our the groomsmen didn’t check out his suit prior to the wedding, and he had a massive yellow spot down his shirt. Luckily the suit shop wasn’t too far away, and they had another shirt he could purchase before the wedding.

Any dress shopping advice?

Find a dress you feel beautiful and confident in, and try not to let the opinions of others alter what you want. It is your day!

What about menswear?

Austin says, “We loved purchasing the suits because they are great quality and the same price as renting a tux—except you get to keep the suit!”

Do you have any general advice for couples currently planning their weddings?

Stick to your budget. And get a videographer!
