Real newlyweds give wedding planning tips based on their experience.

Kimberly and Patrick Dwyer’s wedding took place on Dec. 31, 2017, at the Westin Great Southern Columbus.

If you could do anything about your wedding differently, what would you change and why?

We live out of state, and I would have made an extra trip to Columbus to meet with the hotel event coordinator to iron out all of the little details.

What are you happy you spent money on?

All of our vendors were outstanding and seemed to really like one another as well! I am happy we chose a hotel venue for our New Year’s Eve wedding. It made it easy for all of our guests, and we earned points through the Westin to help pay for our honeymoon.

Did you experience any wedding-day snafus?

We had trouble locating our programs, and they did not get passed out. Not many people noticed until I pointed it out, but we were very disappointed and found them the next morning.

Did you and your fiancé get into any silly arguments?

For the most part we agreed on the details—just not on the cost of them.

Any dress shopping advice?

This part was easy for me; I allowed my bridesmaids to choose any long metallic dress that they wanted to wear as long as it was a good mix of metallics [throughout the bridal party]. It was important to me that they love their dresses.

What about menswear?

Since we live out of town, Patrick picked out the tuxedos the groomsmen would wear and sent everyone an email through the website they rented through. It would update the group as the guys went to get fitted and actually rented their suits. It was very easy for us. Patrick wore a black velvet tuxedo coat, and it was one of my favorite details!

Do you have any general advice for couples currently planning their weddings?

Compromise!

Do you have any general marriage advice, as a newlywed?

Try to enjoy each moment of the wedding planning process and the days leading up to the wedding. It goes by fast, and you will want to remember it all. Spend the money on a good photographer; it is worth it to have great pictures of your special day!
