The son of the founder of HER Realtors unseats California Rep. Dana Rohrabacher.
On Saturday evening, the Associated Press named Harley Rouda Jr., a former Columbus-area real estate agent and the son of HER Realtors’ late founder Harley Rouda Sr., the winner of the election for the 48th Congressional District in Orange County, California.
His opponent, Republican Dana Rohrabacher, was a 15-term representative in the traditionally conservative district. The race received nationwide media attention as a litmus test of the Democratic Party’s ability to flip Republican seats.
Rouda, a former Republican, ran as a Democrat on a platform centered on access to health care and implementing universal background checks on gun purchases, according to The Orange County Register. On the campaign trail, Rouda slammed Rohrabacher for his global warming denials, per the AP. Rohrabacher had also been under scrutiny for his ties to Russia.
Uncounted ballots are still being processed in Orange County, but Rouda’s lead had tripled since the Nov. 6 election. He held a 4-point advantage on Saturday, prompting the AP to call the race in his favor. The first-time politician declared himself the winner on Friday, and according to the Facebook page of his wife, writer Kaira Sturdivant Rouda, they were in Washington, D.C., by Monday. Rohrabacher has yet to concede.
