"Project Runway" alum Kelli Martin on true style, Jessica Lange and inclusive fashion

The Alternative Fashion Mob will host Alternative Fashion Week from April 19 to 26. A week of workshops, presentations and runway shows will culminate in a grand finale fashion show at The Gallery at Strongwater Food & Spirits. Ten local designers will show full collections, and 10 more will show mini-collections. Go here for more info. Meet one of the designers below.

Name: Kelli Martin

Age: 33

Residence: Clintonville

Credentials: Advanced fashion design degree from FIDM, co-founder of the Alternative Fashion Mob and Alternative Fashion Week, designer for "Anti.Label," jack-of-all-trades

My story: Experienced & opinionated designer from the west side of Columbus. I am a FIDM grad, previous Black Market boutique owner, designer, "Project Runway" alum, and Alternative Fashion Week brainchild. My goal in returning to Columbus was to offer a platform to other designers that don't want to work for major corporations or that aren't interested in "playing the game" in the fashion world. That idea birthed the Alternative Fashion Mob. AFM is a "grass roots" group of fashion enthusists that strive to make the "fashion" world more INCLUSIVE... and enjoyable! We collaborate with different facets of the local community and are creating a reason to keep our local talent HERE!

Personal style: Pretty Ugly+Contradiction: late '70s "punk" rock with a speckle of gutter trash, vintage undertones and a pop of "class"

Favorite local stores: Rag-O-Rama, Ohio Thrift, MJR, Plato's Closet, Clothes Mentor-all stores that you never know what gems you might find!

Style icon: If Joan Jett+Brigitte Bardot+Deborah Harry had a baby

Favorite designers: Iris Van Herpen, Thom Browne, Vivienne Westwood

True style is… natural and cannot be purchased.

Inspiration for this collection: Jessica Lange in general, but more specifically, her characters from "American Horror Story"

Biggest challenge in creating this collection: Keeping it "clean" and avoiding all of my desires to dye, tatter and rip each garment. Also, keeping the white.....WHITE!

Are items shown in this collection for sale? The majority of the garments will be for sale after the finale. My price points are fairly accessible; however, this collection has a lot of higher-end fabrics, consisting of silks, chiffon, wool and other unique combinations, so this collection will be slightly higher than most. Prices range from $40 to $400.

Do you do custom work? When time prevails, I do accept custom work. I enjoy a challenge, so I can usually work within a client's budget, as long as they are realistic about what can be done with limited cash. I have created custom work from $75 all the way up to $800.
