COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) - TV talk show host Jerry Springer was once named Ohio's "Democrat of the Year" and still backs causes and candidates in the state where he once aspired to be governor.

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) TV talk show host Jerry Springer was once named Ohio's "Democrat of the Year" and still backs causes and candidates in the state where he once aspired to be governor.

The former Cincinnati mayor is slated to campaign Thursday in Warren for Democrat Nina Turner, who is vying for secretary of state.

The 70-year-old host of the often-pugilistic show that bears his name says Ohio politics still runs in his blood.

Campaign finance reports from this year show Springer has given at least $12,000 to gubernatorial candidate Ed FitzGerald and at least $28,000 to the state Democratic party.

An Ohio Republican Party spokesman says Springer's appearance illustrates the size of FitzGerald's problems and hurts the Democratic ticket.
