BEVERLY HILLS, Calif. (AP) - J.K. Simmons has won the Golden Globe for best supporting actor for "Whiplash."

BEVERLY HILLS, Calif. (AP) J.K. Simmons has won the Golden Globe for best supporting actor for "Whiplash."

Simmons plays a jazz band instructor who uses humiliation, fear and cruelty to motivate his students especially Miles Teller, who co-stars as an ambitious aspiring jazz drummer.

The other nominees Sunday were: Robert Duvall, "The Judge"; Ethan Hawke, "Boyhood"; Edward Norton, "Birdman"; and Mark Ruffalo, "Foxcatcher."

The 72nd annual Golden Globes are airing live from the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills, with hosts Tina Fey and Amy Poehler.
