Each week, we feature a couple from our latest issue.

From the very start, Whitney and Joey Barnard's wedding was all about surprises. Joey started with a surprise proposal during a spontaneous dinner at the Melting Pot. "We had been together for eight years and never really talked about marriage, so it was a complete surprise," says Whitney. "I had no idea, and he picked out the ring himself. It's gorgeous."

At the wedding, which was on Halloween, the Barnards avoided a true Halloween theme. "However, many of our guests chose to dress up at the reception," Whitney remembers. "Some had very creative costumes!"

For the end of the evening, Whitney had had her heart set on fireworks, but was told that Ohio's permit laws wouldn't allow it. She and Joey settled for a sparkler sendoff instead; as they ran through the tunnel of sparklers held aloft by guests, they were met with yet another surprise. Fireworks, courtesy Whitney's parents, greeted them at the end of the tunnel.
