Dana Pontius is looking to get her cupcake-bar business off the ground while finishing up school ... high school, that is. The Upper Arlington resident eventually wants to take classes at Columbus State Community College-"get my basic education and a culinary degree"-and then head to Ohio State for business school. But for now, her focus is Lulu's Cupcake Bar, a concept she developed after shadowing many of Columbus' wedding professionals.

"For about two years, I thought I wanted to be an event coordinator and a wedding planner, so I interned with people in the business," Pontius says. "I spent about 200 hours shadowing and put together this big portfolio for the project."

But then, she says, she determined her real interests lied with the sweet stuff. "I've been interested in baking for a couple years now, and at one point I determined I wanted to do wedding cakes. And then I decided that it's cupcakes I love."

Save the toppings-which range from M&Ms to lemon candies and beyond-everything from Lulu's Cupcake Bar is crafted in a kitchen at Pontius' home. For each wedding, Pontius will bring plain cupcakes, icing and toppings predetermined by the bride and groom.

"When you go to a wedding, [the dessert] is normally pre-chosen for the guests," Pontius says. "At the bar, the guests will choose how they want to combine the flavors for their own, personalized cupcake."

Eventually, Pontius would like to open up her own cupcake shop. That, of course, depends on the success of Lulu's. So pony up to the bar and order dessert-your way.
