Wycliff's Kitchen

The gregarious and charming Wycliff Nduati is usually on hand to guide diners through the menu at Kenyan eatery Wycliff's Kitchen, which opened last fall inside a North Side Indian restaurant. It's an odd setup, but dishes such as the karanga mbuzi (goat stew) make Wycliff's a worthy destination. Be sure to pair dinner with notable sides like pilau (seasoned rice with meat) and kabeji (cabbage). facebook.com/wycliffskitchen

Hong Kong House

This year, the shuttered Hong Kong Buffet on Henderson Road reopened under new owners as Hong Kong House. It's now our go-to spot for a Sichuan fix. The tingling, almost effervescent sensation of the Sichuan peppercorn known as mala is the draw and is found in dishes such as the Sichuan poached fish slices. 1831 W. Henderson Road, Northwest, 614-538-9288

Addis Restaurant

After the departure of Blue Nile, the opening of Addis Restaurant makes for the welcome return of easily accessible Ethiopian food in town. Owner Niman Hassan is a gracious host, and dishes such as the zilzil tibs (strips of beef in a spice mix with vegetables) served with tangy injera bread keep us coming back for more. facebook.com/addisrestaurant
