We're hot for Hass and its wood-fired Northern Mexico fare. Every day, the Hass team spends nearly two hours setting up their open fire pit to impart ideal smokiness on freshly butchered meat for a flavor we've come to love in their chicken-, steak- and pork-laden tacos.

And, arguably, some of the best al pastor in town. And we're not alone. Since opening in January, this Sawmill Road plaza taqueria has doubled its square footage to accommodate the long lines of diners, closing down its attached retail store to make room for more tacos, futbol and beer gatherings and space for Columbus' friendliest taco concierge, owner Israel Jimenez, to work the room. A gateway to authentic Mexican food, Hass has just enough bling (digital screens, a hand-cut wooden logo) to lure us away from lingering Chipotle habits and into a world where smoke doesn't come from a bottle. 7370 Sawmill Road, Northwest Side, 614-760-0155
