The hype around the new Harvest Pizzeria in German Village has been incredible. I've heard nothing but good things, and mostly things like "best pizza ever in Columbus ever." Well, it lived up to the hype. Every single person sitting at my table at lunch today groaned in pleasure after taking the first bite of our Fennel Sausage pizza. Yes, it's that good.
This is wood-fired until charred (but not too charred) pizza. It's thin-crust pizza that stays remarkably crunchy underneath the sauce, cheese and vegetables. It's made with locally sourced cheeses and meats and organic vegetables and artisinal toppings like fennel pollen and truffle salt.
Oh, it's so good.
The Fennel Sausage comes with gouda and smoked provolone, sauteed onions and pretty green fennel pollen fronds. The sausage chunks are mild but flavorful, very very good. There's just enough sauce, just enough cheese, it's cooked until just done. That means walking a thin line between perfectly cooked and burnt, and I'm OK with that. Mmm, wood-fired char.
And here's the Spicy Yuma, with chipotle-spiked sauce, gouda, chorizo, jalapenos, corn and roasted red peppers. The sausage and the jalapenos were plenty spicy, but the mild gouda and sweet red peppers balance out the spiciness perfectly.
I also tried the Watercress & Radicchio Salad with poached figs, cucumbers and dollops of cambozola, with a balsamic fig dressing. A nice and refreshing counterpart to the pizza.
Harvest Pizzeria has a lovely and bright dining room with an open kitchen and a Motown soundtrack. But I can't wait to check out the tiny bricked patio on an evening that's not 100 degrees out.
