As far as Tricia Keels is concerned, October through May is soup season in Central Ohio. And through spring, her Souper Heroes community food project (formerly Columbus Soup and Bread) will be in full swing, hosting monthly soup-night takeovers at city breweries and bars.

This is how it works: Keel announces events via social media, and followers volunteer to prepare family-sized crockpots of soup that correspond with the theme. For example, for the Nov. 11 event at Seventh Son Brewing Co., volunteers will visit the brewery to fill a complementary growler of ale, which they then must incorporate into their soup. Save for January and November, the events are held from 6 to 8 p.m. the first Tuesday of every month. And the soup? It's always free to the public.

Other highlights include the Feb. 3 event where local food truck chefs will craft the night's soups, as well as the March 8 event at Zauber Brewing, which will feature parent-kid soup-making teams.

There is also a donation bin at every event with the money raised benefitting a rotating lineup of local hunger relief organizations, like Mid-Ohio Foodbank and Children's Hunger Alliance.

"These are home cooks, people who love to share their food with people," Keels says of volunteers. "It sounds so simple, but you just have to attend. These are really fun community events. It's just the crowd we attract, I guess."

Formerly Columbus Soup and Bread, Souper Heroes gathers home cooks together for a good cause.
