Happy Fat Tuesday! Today's the day when sheer gluttony isn't just acceptable, it's encouraged. With that comes a longtime Polish tradition: paczki. While paczki aren't as celebrated in Columbus as they are in cities with larger Eastern European traditions (I once attended the Paczki Ball while a reporter in Lorain, Ohio), there are a few places to find them today.

Happy Fat Tuesday! Today's the day when sheer gluttony isn't just acceptable, it's encouraged. With that comes a longtime Polish tradition: paczki. These are super dense pastries (pronounced poonch-key) created to use up lard, egg and sugar before the Lenten season. They're traditionally filled with plum or rose hip jam, but these days you can find just about anything sweet inside. Think of it as the heaviest jelly doughnut you've ever tried.

Our pick: Destination Donuts

Columbus' donut queen, Heather Morris, knows how to make a dense doughnut. Her skills translate beautifully to the treats she's baked up specially for today: a red raspberry-filled and sugar-dusted paczki. It's heavy, but moist and the red raspberry inside adds great tang. You can find Destination Donuts paczki today at Bubbles Tea Co., The Hills Market Downtown and One Line Coffee (pair it with a fruity Alma Negra pour-over if you're here).

Other spots:

Buckeye Donuts has doughnut-like versions in a variety of flavors ranging from lemon to blueberry, raspberry to custard. Wolf's Ridge Brewing will have sweet cheese paczkis available in their newly opened taproom tonight. While we recommend grabbing these Polish treats from a local bakery, you can also find boxes of worthy stand-ins at grocery stores around town, including Giant Eagle, Kroger and the Andersons.

Whatever you do-act fast. A lot of spots will sell out by the afternoon.
