Cara Mangini surprised North Market goers by opening her boutique grocery stand, Little Eater Produce & Provisions, months earlier than expected. It's an extension of Mangini's vegetable-centric Little Eater (just a few stands away)-and features fresh fruits and veggies from area farms, specialty goods from local purveyors (like jams from Black Radish Creamery and chips from Shagbark Seed & Mill). The stand replaces the former provisions provider, Greener Grocer, that closed the end of last year.

We touted our love for fried chicken and beer at The Eagle in a recent dining roundup on Cincinnati's upcoming Over-the-Rhine neighborhood. So imagine our joy when we learned the owners (who also operate Bakersfield) of this food and beer hall are opening a new location, this one in the Short North. Their plan is to take over the current La Fogata (790 N. High St.) when their lease expires next spring. We'll keep you updated as we learn more.

Beer-centric bar The Brass Tap is opening in Polaris (540 Polaris Parkway, Suite 106) on Monday, July 20. It will be a beer-bar first, with 80 taps and a 150-bottle selection, and a restaurant second. Though owner Mic Foster says this will be the first Brass Tap location (there are bars in multiple states, including Florida and Texas) with a full menu, including pretzel-crust pizza.

As you wander through fried food alley at the Ohio State Fair (July 29 to August 9), you might want to detour toward the Ohio Expo Center and the Velvet Ice Cream stand. Here, the old fashioned ice cream company will be serving scoops of its limited-edition flavor: Elephant Ear. It's traditional vanilla swirled with sweet caramel sauce and crispy chunks of fried, cinnamon-coated elephant ear.

In the meantime, if you're in the mood for an ice cream treat, we're celebrating National Ice Cream month on the Crave blog. Up this week: our ode to old fashioned ice cream shops, and the flavors you have to order.
