Options abound, whether you’re looking for fun, sun or snow.
We all love Columbus, but sometimes it’s good to get away for New Year’s Eve, especially because you can make it an extra-long weekend this year.
Here are a few options to consider. Book your trips soon to lock in prices (and please don’t blame us if they have gone up since we went to press).
Spend a long weekend eating and drinking your way through the nation’s capital at a time when the lights are bright and the city is usually quiet. At press time, you could score a round trip ticket to Reagan National Airport for less than $200, and there were several hotels available as well. The Mayflower Hotel (part of the Autograph Collection), several Kimpton brand hotels and the Hamilton Hotel are all under $400 for three nights (before tax).
If Central Ohio isn’t cold enough, head farther north for a weekend at Le Chateau Frontenac or another hotel in Old Quebec, with its cozy surroundings and spectacular views of the St. Lawrence River. You can also benefit from a good exchange rate. Room rates at Le Chateau were starting at $484 per night on New Year’s weekend at press time. Fly into Quebec City or make the drive—the trip will take at least 14 hours, but the traffic will be light compared to driving south.
This mountainous craft beer town is just a seven-hour drive from Columbus, and there is plenty to see and do during a long weekend. You can opt for a fancy retreat at the Biltmore Estate or a low-key weekend in the mountains spent hiking and exploring. There are several quaint lodging options available on Airbnb for less than $200 per night.
You’ll pay handsomely for some bright sunshine in southwest Florida, but it may be well worth the price tag if you need the vitamin D. Airfare, even on Columbus’ discount flyer Allegiant, which goes into Punta Gorda, is going to cost at least $500 for a round trip ticket that weekend. Rooms at Naples’ Ritz-Carlton Beach Resort for the New Year’s weekend were running $1,391 a night at press time. Cut costs by staying at a sister hotel, the Ritz-Carlton at the Tiburon Golf Resort, for rooms starting at $908 per night. From there, the Ritz special shuttle will get you to the beach.
Southwest typically offers low fares into Midway International Airport if you are heading to Chicago. Deals are under $200 if you leave Saturday, Dec. 29, and return to Columbus on Jan. 1. At press time, there were several hotels near the Magnificent Mile and the Loop available for less than $500 for all three nights. You can watch fireworks at the Navy Pier, or head to one of several premier hotel parties, including one at the Drake Hotel that has been voted the best New Year’s Eve party by Chicago Scene.
Closer to home is the less-than-five-hour trip to The Greenbrier, a historic resort tucked into the mountains of southern West Virginia. Another spectacular venue, you’ll be treated to five-star hospitality, as well as great food and drink. After hours, the resort’s private casino offers music by a DJ and much more. When we checked, rates were $424 a night during the long weekend. Events are planned throughout and include a special kids’ dinner for New Year’s Eve costing $95 each for kids 6–12. Teens can attend the Z Night Party in the inn’s bowling alley for $65 each, and the adult soiree, from 8 p.m. to 1 a.m., is $225. Advance reservations are required for all.
