Preston’s: A Burger Joint, the creation of chefs Matt Heaggans and Catie Randazzo, is adding a second permanent pop-up location, this one inside Eugene’s Canteen in the Short North. Owner Justin Boehme opened Eugene’s in May at 765 N. High St., replacing Da Levee. It’s the next step in Heaggans and Randazzo’s plan to scale Preston’s (think Columbus’ version of Shake Shack).
In other Preston’s news, Randazzo’s popular food truck Challah! will be rebranded as Preston’s food truck beginning Sunday, Aug. 5. The Columbus native first launched her Jewish deli-inspired food truck in 2013. In a press release, Randazzo stated that not much will change about the truck except the paint. “You’ll still get the same food made with integrity, and you’ll still be able to order Challah’s Crispy Chicken Sandwich on the Preston’s truck,” Randazzo promises. Challah!’s final day of operation will be Wednesday, Aug. 1, at Seventh Son Brewing Co.
Dan the Baker’s Toast Bar has expanded its hours and added a new lineup of sandwiches, salads and savory breakfast items. The diminutive café and bakery at 1028 Ridge St. in Grandview is now open 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Wednesday through Sunday.
Swensons Drive-In, the Akron-based burger chain, broke ground this week on its first Central Ohio location at 7490 Sawmill Road in Dublin. A second Swensons location is in the works at 2200 Ikea Way in Polaris.
Another poke spot lands in Columbus this fall. The fast-growing national chain Pokéworks announced plans this week to open a franchise in The View on Fifth development at 1005 W. Fifth Ave. in September. Pokéworks was founded in Irvine, California, in 2015.
Chef Jack Moore of Watershed Kitchen & Bar recently competed on the Food Network show Beat Bobby Flay. An airdate has not yet been announced.
Last week, owners Moishe and Natalie Appelbaum closed their health-conscious eatery Pocket Produce at 3496 N. High St. in Clintonville.
Kollektiv, a coworking space and bar, is set to open in the original location of Max & Erma’s,739 S. Third St. in German Village. Look for a fall opening. The original Max & Erma’s closed last August after 45 years in business.
The Short North Food Hall has added another food offering at 1112 N. High St. Uncle Drew’s Fried Chicken, a spinoff of Uncle Nick’s Greek Fried Chicken in Grandview, serves pressure-fried chicken based on a family recipe from Buena Vista Café in Warren, Ohio. Uncle Drew’s joins four other food vendors inside Short North Food Hall, including Legacy Smokehouse, Shokudo Modern Asian Kitchen, Short Grain Sushi and Vinny’s Italian.
The Ohio Craft Brewers Association (OCBA) and Broadcast Music, Inc. (BMI) are partnering for BMI’s Nashville Songwriters Tour, which crosses Ohio Saturday, August 11, through Wednesday, August 22.The tour will showcase Ohio craft beers and “in the round” acoustic performances from Nashville songwriters at various breweries. The Central Ohio stops on the tour include BrewDog in Canal Winchester, Grove City Brewing Co., Zaftig Brewing Co. in Worthington and Combustion Brewery & Taproom in Pickerington.
Koko Tea Salon & Bakery opened last week at 3951 Easton Square Place East next to Brio Tuscan Grille. Koko also has a Downtown location at 361 E. Broad St.
Beer of the Month: BrewDog’s Elvis Juice
Was Elvis a fan of grapefruit? Whether The King was an admirer of the fruit or not, BrewDog has loaded its Elvis Juice IPA with grapefruit peel. The tart fruit adds a sour note to an IPA that’s rich with piney and bitter flavors. The beer pours deep yellow with a lacy white head. Interspersed with the punch of hops is a bready sweetness. It’s a good example of BrewDog’s “go big or go home” mentality. (The Scottish brewery even won an appeal against Elvis Presley’s estate to keep the name.)
