The Lox Bagel Shop is expected to open Monday at 772 N. High St., in the former location of Homefare. The new breakfast and lunch spot offers bagels, boiled and baked fresh in-house; egg sandwiches; and lunch offerings including house-smoked pastrami and house-smoked lox. Behind the project are Kevin Crowley, a partner at Northstar Café for almost six years, and chef Silas Caeton, whose resume includes Veritas and Cosecha Cocina.
Jimmyluka’s Bar-Deli opened this week in the East Public development at 701 Parsons Ave. on the South Side. The new eatery from owner Jimmy Dragich features specialty deli sandwiches, soups, salads and a full bar. Jimmyluka’s, which is named after Dragich’s son, will be open 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Thursday and until 11 p.m. Friday and Saturday.
Another sandwich spot, Newfangled Kitchen, opened this week in Bexley at 2258 E. Main St., formerly C'est Si Bon Café. The new eatery, from owners Eric and Laura Dennison, specializes in meatloaf sandwiches and offers a variety of other sandwiches, soups and salads.
Legacy Smokehouse opens its newest location this Saturday at 3987 Main St. in Old Hilliard.
It’s the end of an era for fans of Kihachi Japanese Restaurant, one of Columbus’ best restaurants and the standard-bearer for Japanese cuisine in the city. Chef-owner Ryuji “Mike” Kimura will close the restaurant for good this Saturday at 2667 Federated Blvd. Kimura, who opened Kihachi in 1993, has been planning to retire for several years. The Sawmill-area restaurant has become an icon in Columbus thanks to Kimura’s meticulous reverence for traditional Japanese cuisine and omakase menus. In 2010, Kihachi gained national attention when Anthony Bourdain’s show No Reservations featured the restaurant. (Speaking of no reservations, the restaurant is booked through Saturday.) At press time, a new tenant for the Sawmill Plaza space had not been announced.
After nine years in operation, Basil in the Short North has closed. The owners plan to open a new concept in the space at 1124 N. High St. next spring. Basil’s two other locations remain open in the Brewery District and Upper Arlington.
Odds & Ends
Italian Village’s Cosecha Cocina launches brunch service starting this weekend. You’ll find brunch dishes such as chicken and corn masa waffles at the Italian Village restaurant from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays.
Bonifacio's modern Filipino fare will be featured on the Cooking Channel show Burgers, Brew & 'Que. The episode airs Tuesday, Dec. 18, at 9 p.m. The restaurant at 1577 King Ave. is hosting a viewing party on Tuesday from 6:30 to 10 p.m.
