Each week, we feature a couple from our latest issue.
Pamela and Michael Engbert first met through mutual friends in college, but it wasn't until they reconnected nine years later that sparks started to fly. When Michael realized Pamela was The One, he packed a picnic dinner and took his fiancée-to-be to the river to enjoy it. The surprise lay in the dessert-or rather, under it. Beneath the cake was written, "Will you marry me?" Of course, Pamela said yes to the sweet proposal.
Their urban-meets-rustic-themed wedding was extremely personal, thanks to the large number of family members who attended from near and far, says Pamela. The most special memory of all, though, was when she gave her father an embroidered handkerchief just before he escorted her down the aisle.
But the memory that stands out most in terms of sheer "did that really happen?"-ness, she says, actually took place the night before.
"The power went out the night of our rehearsal dinner and we almost had to move locations-to our house-to accommodate 60 people," Pamela explains. "At the last minute, the power was restored at Schmidt's and we were able to go!"
